Zimbabwe Hunting Safari

DURATION OF SAFARI

Hunting can be conducted all year round, however the period April to October is generally recognized as the prime hunting period. The rains fall from November to March and accessibility to certain areas is limited. May, June and July are the cooler months with October being the hottest. See the price list below for minimum days required for the different species.

ACCOMMODATION AND HUNTING AREA

The Dande North Concession is located in the far northeastern section of Zimbabwe’s famous Zambezi Valley, between the Angwa and Zambezi Rivers. Covering some 130 000ha (321 000 acres), it is a vast tract of land, as diverse as it is beautiful.

Bordered in the east by Mozambique and in the west by the Chewore Safari Area, this is a sparsely populated land that has changed very little for centuries.

The area is well known for the variety and abundance of game, especially buffalo. In fact, it is considered “The Best” buffalo hunting area in Zimbabwe. The concession is NOT fenced, nor are any of the camps, affording our clients a true wilderness experience.

My associates operate four camps within the concession. The sheer size of the concession makes it possible to operate all four camps simultaneously without hunters ever seeing each other.

Camps are usually allocated based on the trophies sought after by our clients, however, one may move to another camp (depending on availability), to facilitate easier hunting of certain species.

Hunting Camps

Pedza Pasi - serves as the main base camp and is situated in the central part of the concession, affording easy access to either the northern or southern hunting areas.

It accommodates six (6) clients in three typical brick under thatch chalets all with en-suite facilities which include flush toilets and hot/cold running water.

The main lodge which houses the lounge, dining and bar area overlooks a waterhole, which attracts various species of game (including buffalo and lion), especially in the dry season. A 15Kva (220v) generator provides the camp with power.

Mururu - is also situated in the central part of the concession, approximately 25 kilometres due west of Pedza Pasi. Sited beneath a grove of towering Red Mahogany Trees on the banks of a seasonal river, it also accommodates six (6) clients in three brick under thatch chalets each with en-suite facilities which include flush toilets and hot/cold running water.

Each unit has a private view over the riverbed. The main lodge houses the lounge, dining and bar table and also overlooks the river. This is an extremely “wild” camp with at least 3 of the big-five wondering through camp almost on a daily basis. A 5Kva (220v) generator provides the camp with power.

Mukanga - is situated in the southwestern part of the concession, bordering the western boundary of the Chiwore Safari Area. Sited on a bend on the Mukanga River, the lodge and bungalows all have unrestricted private views of the river.

Accommodating four (4) clients in two bungalows (brick under thatch), both with en-suite facilities which include flush toilets and hot/cold running water. This is the smallest of our camps, affording a great ambiance in the true sense of “been in wildest Africa.” There is no electricity in camp, gas lamps are available for lighting.

Masau - is situated in the extreme north of the concession on the banks of the Zambezi River and offers luxury accommodation to fisherman, photographic enthusiasts and hunters alike.

Essentially a 16 bed camp. Masau has been divided into two adjoining camps in order to accommodate both hunting and fishing parties simultaneously if required. A 22Kva (220v) generator provides power to both camps.

Masau 1- comprises four (4) brick under thatch chalets, all with en-suite shower and toilets with hot/cold running water. The thatched main lodge has a spacious bar, lounge and dining area with spectacular views up river.

Masau 2- boasts four large, East African style tents under thatch, each with twin beds, en-suite facilities with flush toilets and hot/cold running water and a unique view of the Zambezi. The view from the central dining area looks down river towards Mozambique and like its sister lodge has a bar, lounge, and dining area all under thatch.

HUNTING LICENSES AND EXPORT OF TROPHIES

Licenses are obtained for you but are not included in the trophy fee. Trophies are field prepared, cleaned, disinfected, dipped and packed ready for delivery to a taxidermist of your choice. If you choose to have your trophies processed in Zimbabwe, we recommend that you use the services of TAXIDERMY ENTERPRISES. They have been in business for many years and their trophy mounts are world class. If trophies are to be shipped out of Zimbabwe, these will be handled by our own dipping and packing company, LASERLINE TROPHY SERVICES. Some species require CITES permits and we will advise you on this before booking.

TRAVEL INFORMATION AND FIREARMS

My associates subscribe to the Medical Air Rescue Service (MARS) and are linked to their HF radio network, thus enabling a medical team to respond to any life threatening situations at short notice. Medical insurance is available at US$10.00 per person per day under the MARS scheme.

This will cover the ambulance and air rescue costs to the nearest suitable medical facility. All hospital and related medical costs are to be covered by the client’s personal medical insurance. It is recommended that anti-malarial tablets be taken before, during and after your stay. Please consult your doctor in this regard.

Although all hunting vehicles carry first aid kits, it is advisable to carry your own supply of prescribed medication and first aid supplies. Please ensure that your polio, cholera, typhoid and tetanus vaccinations are up to date.

Valid passports are essential. Visas, if required can usually be purchased at the port of entry and currently cost US$30 per person, however, it is best to check with your local travel agent before departure. You will fly into Johannesburg International Airport in South Africa, from where you will fly to Harare International Airport.

Here you will be met and transferred by air charter to the Dande North Concession, at a cost according to the type of plane used and the amount of clients. Clients preferring to drive into Dande will be charged for the return road transfer. All persons departing from any major airport in Zimbabwe are required to pay airport tax.

For domestic flights, either charter or scheduled, all passengers are required to pay US$5 departure tax. International departure tax (US$ 30) is normally included in the cost of the tickets, however please check with your travel agent that this has been done. It is recommended that visitors carry the exact denominations for this purpose.

A medium calibre bolt-action rifle such as a .30-06 or .300 Win Mag is suitable for most plains game and leopard. Large antelope such as eland require a minimum calibre of .338. If dangerous game is to be hunted, a .375 H&H Magnum or larger is recommended.

Use only the best premium grade bullets available such as Nosler, Barnes or Trophy Bonded. Solids are recommended for thick-skinned animals such as buffalo and elephant. Sixty rounds per calibre is suggested. It is wise to practice your shooting well before the safari so that you are totally comfortable with your rifle/s and ammunition.
